Asphalt for Road Construction: 5 Reliable High-Performance Solutions

Reliable Asphalt Solutions for Durable Pavements

Asphalt for road construction is an engineered mixture of mineral aggregates, bitumen binder and carefully controlled air voids. It is widely used for highways, urban roads, airport pavements, parking areas and industrial surfaces.

Alps Asphalt supplies high-quality paving bitumen and project-specific binder solutions for the production of durable asphalt mixtures. The appropriate bitumen grade is selected according to climate, traffic intensity, pavement structure, aggregate properties and the approved mix design.

Our team supports contractors, asphalt plants and infrastructure companies in selecting suitable materials for reliable and long-lasting pavement performance.

What Is Asphalt?

Asphalt—also known as asphalt concrete—is produced by combining graded aggregates with a controlled percentage of bitumen binder. The bitumen coats the aggregate particles and provides adhesion, flexibility and resistance to water penetration.

The performance of an asphalt pavement depends on several factors as below:

  • Quality and grading of aggregates
  • Type and grade of paving bitumen
  • Binder content
  • Mixing and compaction temperatures
  • Air-void percentage
  • Traffic loading
  • Regional climate
  • Construction and quality-control procedures

The asphalt mixture must therefore be designed and tested for the specific requirements of each project.

Types of Asphalt Mixtures

1. Hot Mix Asphalt – HMA

Hot Mix Asphalt is produced by heating both the aggregates and bitumen before mixing. It is commonly used for highways, main roads, airport runways and heavy-duty pavements.

HMA provides:

  • High structural strength
  • Good resistance to traffic loads
  • Strong aggregate–binder adhesion
  • Reliable compaction
  • Long pavement service life

The Federal Highway Administration identifies several HMA mix types for different pavement functions and traffic conditions.

2. Warm Mix Asphalt – WMA

Warm Mix Asphalt technologies allow asphalt to be produced and placed at lower temperatures than conventional HMA. Depending on the selected technology and approved mix design, this may reduce energy use, fumes and short-term binder ageing while improving workability and haul distance.

3. Stone Matrix Asphalt – SMA

Stone Matrix Asphalt is a gap-graded mixture developed for heavily trafficked roads. Its stone-on-stone aggregate structure provides increased resistance to rutting and permanent deformation.

Typical applications include:

  • Expressways
  • Intersections
  • Bus lanes
  • Port terminals
  • Heavy industrial pavements

4. Dense-Graded Asphalt

Dense-graded asphalt contains a continuous range of aggregate sizes. It is commonly used in surface, binder and base courses because it offers a practical balance of strength, durability and workability.

5. Polymer-Modified Asphalt

Polymer-modified binders can be used when conventional paving bitumen does not provide the required performance. Modified asphalt may offer improved resistance to rutting, fatigue cracking, thermal cracking and heavy traffic.

Recommended Bitumen Grades

Selection of the correct binder is essential for asphalt pavement performance. Alps Asphalt can supply several penetration-grade bitumen options, including:

  • Bitumen 10/20 for very hot climates and heavy-load applications
  • Bitumen 20/30 for high-temperature and heavy-traffic pavements
  • Bitumen 30/45 for medium-hard paving applications
  • Bitumen 50/70 for road paving materials in moderate climatic conditions
  • Bitumen 60/70 for highways, urban roads and general paving applications
  • Bitumen 70/100 for colder climates and applications requiring greater flexibility
  • Polymer-modified bitumen for demanding pavement conditions

Final binder selection must be based on the project specification, expected pavement temperature, traffic loading and laboratory mix design.

Asphalt Applications

Our bitumen solutions can be used in asphalt mixtures designed for:

  • Highways and motorways
  • Urban streets
  • Airport runways and taxiways
  • Bridges and access roads
  • Parking areas
  • Port and container terminals
  • Industrial yards
  • Road base and binder courses
  • Wearing courses
  • Pavement rehabilitation
  • Heavy-duty transport routes

Quality and Testing

Asphalt mixtures should be evaluated according to the applicable national or international project requirements. Relevant testing may include:

  • Aggregate gradation
  • Binder content
  • Marshall stability and flow
  • Air voids
  • Bulk density
  • Moisture sensitivity
  • Rutting resistance
  • Fatigue and cracking performance

ASTM publishes dedicated standards for asphalt mixtures, including methods for determining asphalt content, density and Marshall stability. Super pave mixtures may also be designed according to AASHTO M 323, which establishes requirements for binder, aggregates and volumetric mix design.

Technical Note: Asphalt mixture composition and performance values depend on the approved job mix formula, aggregate source, binder grade and project specification. A project-specific Technical Data Sheet or Certificate of Analysis can be provided based on the requested material.
